Elk and West Elk Mountains

The Elk Mountains are located on the west side of the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains in the west-central Colorado, southwest of Aspen and west of Sawatch Range. The tallest mountains are Castle Peak, 14,265', Maroon Peak, 14,156', and Capitol Peak, 14,130'. Maroon Bells is one of the best known tourist destinations in Colorado. The Lower West Elk Mountains are located west of Crested Butte and north-east of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The highest mountain is West Elk Peak, 13,035', followed by Mount Gunnison, 12,719' and Whetstone Mountain, 12,516 feet.
