This is a very compact zoom lens made specifically for Canon EOS M mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. EOS M has an 18MP APS-C 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor, 22.3x14.9mm. It has an EOS-M mount, so it is compatible only with EOS M. The focal length of 18-55mm is 35mm-equivalent of 29-88mm. The whole camera with the lens is only 530g (18.7 oz).

Click on the "Various f-stops" thumbnail below, to see the charts made at different f-stops and focal lengths. The two circle charts for each f-stop and three focal lengths are displayed - one for the center and the second for the corner of the sensor. The sharpness was best at f/8 in all focal lengths.

Lens performance was tested at three focal lengths, 18, 30, and 55 mm. To see the charts in full magnification please click on the thumbnails below. Dependence of the image quality in various parts of the APS-C sensor is shown, with the average resolution in hundreds of line widths per picture height (LW/PH) given below each chart.

The lens is relatively sharp (around 3000 lines per sensor height) for all apertures from 3.5 to 11, and then shows decreased sharpness, as seen in all lenses for DSLRs. Since the sensor height is 3456 pixels, the lens is sharp to the sensor's maximum resolution at all focal length in the middle of the sensor at f 5.6 and f 8 settings while in the corner of the frame the lens is less sharp at 55mm.

Distortions are low at all focal lengths, but more visible at low focal lengths - note that the circles are not perfectly round and the resolution depends on the angle of reading (readings from top left to bottom right shows the best results while the lines counted from bottom left to top right show the worst resolution), but the effect is minimal.  Chromatic aberrations are visible at low focal lengths, in the entire frame except at the very center. At higher focal lengths this is a non-issue.

It is a good, but not stellar, quality lens.
